Using the Internet to Save Money

Guess what, the government has recently determined that we are now officially in a recession. Like those of us trying to eke out a living weren't already aware of that fact. What's scary is that we are faced with an uncertain financial climate for some time to come.

This makes now more than ever an important time to learn about stretching money. But not just save it, make each dollar stretch further than ever before. Most Americans don't realize where their money is going. We often end up running out of money before we run out of month. So, here are a few tips to take some of the stress of money out of your life.

The first most important step is determining exactly where your money is going now. For just one month track where your money goes. Try to track the expenses in such a way that you can tell what portion of your income is required for basic fixed expenses and what portion goes to variable expenses.

Fixed expenses would include expenses that are required to cover your very basic needs. That would be basic food, shelter, and only required monthly bills like utility bills to have heat and water. Variable Expenses would include the expenses where you have some influence over how much is spent, things like cable cell phones, newer car, expensive dinners.

Most Americans also have a nasty habit of allowing whatever expenses we have to expand till it matches whatever income we earn. In reality almost all our expenses are variable and we have some control over them.

Lets look at a few examples:
Television: For $50 or so you can get an old used television that receives the free over the air signals. Have a little more money and you'll want a bigger TV with a better picture. More money and you'll probably want cable or satellite to get more channels. More money and you'll want yet a bigger TV, maybe a big screen plasma. Then don't forget the add-ons. DVD player, Tivo or DVR Box.

Internet Access: You can go to a library or most coffee shops, even many McDonalds have free wi-fi. To have access at home you can use dial up for $20 a month. But have a little more money and we'll want high speed access at home so we can download movies for our big screen TV.

Food: If we shop carefully we can get bargains that will extend our food dollar and cook at home. But have a little extra and the first thing we want is to eat out. The more we make the more we tend to spend on eating out.

Cars: For a $1000 or so you can get a car that will get you to and from where you need to go. Extra money and we want a brand new car. Lot's of extra money and we want a luxury car.

Housing:You can rent a small apartment, rent a larger apartment, buy a small house, buy a larger house, buy even a bigger house. The more money we have the more we want.

None of these things are bad. It's the American way to enjoy the fruits of our labor. However, the stress of dealing with our money comes when we have pushed our expenses up to or past the amount that we earn.

Doesn't it make sense to make sure that we are getting the maximum benefit from the money that we earn? The first step is to find out what we actually spend our money on each month and then identifying the areas where we stretch our dollar and get a better value.

Simple Secrets to Save More & Spend Less

It's a tough economic time out there and it may not be getting better for some time. Watching what you spend and how much you spend is important more now than ever. For the past few years the United States has had a dismal savings rate, and many people are paying the consequences for their lack of preparation. Saving doesn't really work if you keep spending, but saving and skimping on the spending can be a successful combination.

How many of live pay check to pay check? This may not be because we don't make enough, but rather because we spend beyond our means. It is time to start to reevaluate what is more important and holding yourself accountable for those liberal spending habits.

A great way to help discipline yourself is to set up a personal budget. This budget should list all of your income streams as well as all of your expenses. For a few months track everything you spend money on and all the money you make. This will give you a good idea of where all that money is going and put into reality how much you may be spending. The next step is to create a strict budget as to what you will be allowed to spend money on. Of course the important things come first, such as rent and insurance, and then you can set aside some money for shopping or social activities. Also put in your budget what you plan on saving each month and stick to it.

Now that you have broken down everything you spend money on and set yourself up a budget, you can look into the saving aspect of things. Saving now will help you in the future and more importantly it will set aside some emergency reserves for tough times. There is a rule of thumb out there that you should save somewhere around 10% of your gross income. This is a safe number but by no means where you should stop. After looking at your budget you should have a better idea as to how much you feel comfortable saving. Be sure to make this the first thing you do every month.

Remember it's about saving more and spending less. With some self discipline you will start to see dramatic results in you bank account and might just feel a little better the next time your credit card bill arrives.

Printable Coupons Can Save You Thousands on Groceries and Other Items

Printable coupons are a great money saving tool. It is not uncommon to find coupons printed on newspapers, magazines, catalogs, or flyers. The coupons usually say that they entitle its holder to a special discount, a special gift or a buy-one-take-one incentive on certain products or service.

What is great about these printable coupons is that companies have realized their importance in enticing customers to take advantage of using them and thus making it necessary to visit their stores. The result is that coupons can be found in many printed materials nowadays and it saves buyers like you and I a lot of money. Usually, it is the fast food restaurants and grocery stores that give away printable coupons. Luxury and high-end retailers do not normally give away coupons except for a few exceptions.

An example of printable coupons for fast food chains are those that give the customer free french fries or an upgrade on their drink size upon presenting the coupon. This is a good advertisement for the fast food chain, and at the same time it provides savings for the customer. Sometimes though, it makes them order more or eat even when they are not hungry, just because they have a coupon.

Another good example of printable coupons are those which provide for a free added service or a buy-one-get-one free on the same service upon presenting said coupon. Hair salons, nail parlors, spas, opticals, photo studios and the like offer these promotions. Sometimes though, it makes consumers want to try these services even if they do not need them. More often than not, these coupons only provide for the most basic of services, or a small discount. However, there are still some coupons out there that are good deals, and you must watch out for them.

Coupons work because it makes customers want to buy and check out the stores which usually results in more purchases or repeat customers. With proper planning you can save thousands of dollars per year on your groceries and personal care items.

Tips to Save Money on Groceries

There is never a question if you want to save money, the answer is always yes. Of course, doing so in the state of our economy is no easy feat. Being armed with a little knowledge on tips of how to save money, can pay off dividends in the future. Most of us can cut costs on everyday expenses without making any major life style changes, you just have to know how and where to look to save money.

Cutting costs on grocery shopping is an easy way to save money, without having to go without. Here are some tips that you can use to achieve this:

-Coupons, with a warning-Using coupons is a simple way to save a lot of money on your weekly (or more) shopping trips. The Sunday news paper is usually full of coupons. You can also join free coupon sites on the internet like CoolSavings. Do a search for your favorite name brand products and most of the time; you can receive free coupons for signing up with their newsletters. Stores weekly flyers will also tell you the weekly specials as well as have coupons. Here is where the warning comes in, do not get roped in to buying a product simply because you have a coupon. If you usually do not use a product, it is a good chance you do not need to cut out that coupon. If you only utilize coupons for the products you use on regular bases it can save you a lot of money, but buy everything that you have a coupon for and you will end up spending more in the end.

-Be a comparative shopper-This should be one of your number one goals while shopping. Even if you have a coupon, if another brand is cheaper, then obviously buy the cheaper brand. Look at the weight volume, one item may cost $1.25 but have 8oz less then the $1.35 product. Scan the weekly flyers, shop at the store that has more of the items you need on sale.

-Make a list-One of my largest pitfalls was not making a list when I went shopping, I always ended up with duplicate items, and more things then I really needed. Meal plan for the week, search your pantry and fridge, and make a list of what you are missing, buy only those items. Make sure you ask family members before you go if they need anything, to avoid repeat trips that always add up to more useless items being purchased.

-Sign up for rewards-A lot of grocery stores have rewards cards, which allow you to earn special savings. Even if it is a store that you do not normally shop at, sign up anyways it is free and could save you money later on down the road. Look for the grocery stores that offer double and triple coupons to get the most out of the coupons you do cut.

-Generics are just as good-For most things the generic brand is just as great quality as the more expensive name brands. Check the ingredient lists and compare if you are unsure. The generic brand will usually be upwards of $1 cheaper (depending on the item). Store brands and generic companies also keep up on the latest trends, if a new item comes out that you love, it is a pretty safe bet there will be a generic brand coming out within a few weeks.

-Try using fresh meats-Freezing meat is great when there is a large meat sale, but it can end up biting you if you are not careful. First find out how long the meat is good for after you freeze it, date all of your packages and keep the oldest ones in front to be used first. This is where I got in trouble, I would forget to take something out of the freezer to make for dinner so I would stop for fast food or go to the store to buy meat to cook up. Then once I was cleaning out my freezer I had to throw away a lot of unused meats. If you have fresh meat in your fridge, you know it is there to cook up, and you will be inclined to use it before it spoils. On that note, make sure you always check the dates, and get the ones that will still be fresh several days later.

-Never shop hungry-I know everyone says it, but it bears repeating. Everything looks and smells so good when you are starving. This will always lead to more impulse buys.

-Set a budget-Set a food budget and stick to it. I actually take the money out of my account and pay with cash; it is so easy to overspend when you swipe a card. You are less likely to make impulse buys when you are extremely aware of the money you are spending.

-And finally, Know your store-Shopping at a new grocery store can actually cost you money. In a store you are familiar with, you know where everything is so you can go to the exact isle you need. If you do not know the store you must cruise every isle and you will be more inclined to purchase excess items.

-These are just a few ways to cut costs on something so simple as grocery shopping. Being a continence shopper can pay off dividends.

Little is Too Little When it Comes to Spending Less Money?

Saving is important but is rarely done in the United States in our society today. In the earlier part of the 20th century, saving money was a well honored tradition, but it has fallen to the wayside over the past few decades. This is due to credit mainly. If you want to buy something and don't have the money you can just charge it, whereas 50 years ago, you would have to wait to buy it until you had enough saved.

Credit has become a problem for many of us because it has put us in debt. Saving money is a foreign term to many Americans. Luckily, some people have been turning around. If you search the web, you can find many blogs and sites devoted to saving money and eliminating debt. It has been somewhat of a revolution that has swept the internet, and hopefully affected the lives of many families and individuals.

It's great to see someone focused on saving money. They want to save money for college, to build an emergency fund, to buy a new house or car, or to invest and prepare for retirement. These are great goals to achieve and can only be done with diligent saving. Still, problems sometimes do arise. When you begin to save, you may get caught up in it. Are you saving beyond your own comfort level? Are you affecting the people around you and your own well-being by saving too much?

Yes, it is possible to save too much, but not in the sense that you save so much you don't know what to do with it. You can save too much by being too frugal or, dare I say, stingy. If you deprive yourself of everything just to save a buck, you are saving too much. Do you stay home and read books or talk to yourself instead of going out because you can't spare a few dollars for a dinner with friends once in a while? Have your parents forgotten what you look like because you refuse to take the 35 minute extra drive to their house for fear of wasting too much money on gas? Are you wearing the same worn clothes you've had the past 5 years because you can't part with your cash?

You have to balance your life. Spend money where you can afford it and only on things you truly need and will truly enjoy. Give yourself some spending money in your budget, and if you have trouble spending it, make it a requirement that you have to spend that money on things you want.

If you are in heavy debt and need to get out of it, I recommend throwing everything you can at it. In this case, be stingy! Hopefully it will only take a year or two and then you can transition to a more comfortable lifestyle.
